Intro to Splint Basketry Workshop

Introduction to Splint Basketry
In this workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of splint basketry. Together, we will make a complete basket from start to finish, taking time to discuss material preparation, weaving basics, and key techniques common to this form of basketry. No prior basketry experience is required for this workshop.

Splint basketry refers to basketry using flat strips of material. Anything from hardwood to papercan be used as splint, though we will use rattan reed in this workshop. Throughout the day, we will complete a simple “cat head” style basket inspired by the masterful splint baskets of woodland Indigenous Americans and the American Shakers.
All working material and tools will be provided by the instructor.
